Post subject: How to protect yourself from hackers Posted: Mon Jul 06, 2009 10:16 pm |

We have had two incidents when an account has been hacked in our guild. The first one was Hilda quite a while ago, and the latest is Psykbryt. There are steps to protect your computer from key-loggers and hackers. The best way is to buy the Blizzard Authenticator. (I have just ordered it and will write a small revive about it when I have used it for a while.)
Here are some steps for protection:
Do not install everything. Only install what you really need and know is spy-ware free. Use a program to check that the file is free from virus and spy-ware before double-clicking on it. Only download addons from a trusted site such as www.curse.com and even better use a program to manage the addons such as the Curse client. Do not buy gold! Or use a power leveling service, they install key-loggers. Use Anti-virus software, also while you are playing. Start WoW with the Launcher. This reduce the risk of key-loggers because the launcher checks for known key-loggers. Use anti spy-ware software. Scan your computer every day. Keep Windows up to date, use Automatic Update. Do not use Windows XP, instead Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Mac Os. They are all much more secure than XP. And no matter what people are saying, do not turn of UAC; this is a very good protection as no key-logger can be installed without you giving it permission. And to be really sure, buy Blizzards authenticator, from Blizzard own store Copy and pasting the password does not help, key-loggers keep track on that too. * Spy-ware = programs that spies on you, for example key logger.[/list]

I found a very good blue thread on the official forum, http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.htm ... 3697&sid=1I recieved a very convincing wow-related phishing mail today. Only 2 things gave it away. The adress from where it was sent and one line in it was in Spanish. I'll post it when I get home.
